Witney Shopmobility celebrates 2000th booking

Posted On 13 June 2013

It was announced today that Witney Shopmobility, which is managed by Oxford City Council on behalf of West Oxfordshire District Council, is celebrating its 2,000th customer booking since the scheme was introduced nearly 5 years ago.

The booking was made by former Witney Mayor Arthur Titherington, aged 87.

The former Mayor, who lives in Church Green, Witney, has been a regular user of the Shopmobility scheme in the last 3 years. Mt Titherington said: "It is unquestionably very good. Neither I, nor my wife, can get around on foot as we used to do, but now I can nip around town and do all our shopping. It is an absolute godsend."

Councillor and Cabinet Member for Communities at West Oxfordshire District Council Jill Dunsmore said: "Witney Shopmobility is a very popular service and we are very proud to have set up a scheme in West Oxfordshire. I am pleased that Mr Titherington has found it to be so useful and hope that this will encourage others with mobility difficulties to take advantage of this excellent free service."

The Witney Shopmobility scheme allows members of the public to hire manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and powered scooters for free. The service can be used by anyone with a mobility difficulty as a result of accident, illness, injury or age.

Trained Shopmobility staff are on hand to advise and help users with booking and using the equipment offered. Robin Brooks Manager explained: "The wheelchairs and scooters are incredibly easy to use and our customers are of all ages. The youngest we've had was 9 years old and our oldest, who is 103 years old, is one of our regular users."

The Shopmobility service in Witney is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30 am until 4 pm. It is based in the Langdale Gate building, which is close to the car park in Witney Town Centre. Dedicated disabled parking bays are available adjacent to the building and there is bus stop for the Dial-a-Ride service. For information or to make a booking, telephone 01993 864 787.
